NO on Proposal 1

It is the position of the Michigan Association of Treatment Court Professionals (MATCP) that available evidence does not support the legalization of marijuana.  Therefore, MATCP opposes Proposal 1.

Every dangerous and addictive drug was once believed to be safe and medicinal.  Cocaine, heroin, opiate pain medication and nicotine were once advertised as being good for you, or at least not harmful.  In every instance, we learned otherwise -- the hard way.  The marijuana in Proposal 1 is not the marijuana you think it is.  Current THC levels drastically exceed those of prior decades, creating a dangerous and possibly addictive substance.

Before voting on Proposal 1, voters should ask:
What level of THC is safe, if any?   Is it addictive?  What is the impact on an unborn fetus? What is the impact on the developing brain? What impact will normalization have on adult and underage use? What is the impact on traffic fatalities and injuries? What is the impact of exposure to second-hand smoke?
Evidence generated from other states that have legalized marijuana can advise you on the impact of marijuana legalization and commercialization on public health and safety.

MATCP has long been committed to guiding the treatment courts in the state of Michigan and the broader criminal justice and treatment communities with science, not ideology.  Proposal 1 may be misleading to the citizens of Michigan regarding the harmful effects of marijuana.  The research and the evidence generated from other states regarding the safety of recreational marijuana use, causes MATCP to stand against the legalization of marijuana.
