  • SCAO Best Practices - presented by Dr. Jessica Parks, Deputy Director, SCAO Trial Court Services
  • During this plenary session, SCAO will present research findings regarding recidivism, models to follow and the reasons behind doing so, the new SCAO Standards & Best Practices Manuals, the new SCAO Problem-Solving Courts certification process, and the cycles of certification.

  • Treatment Court 101 [Room: Copper/Granite]
    • Presenter: Hon. Geno Salomone, 23rd District Sobriety Court Presiding Judge, Wayne County
    • Members of current, successful treatment court teams, with many years of experience will provide practical advice for new program operations. The presenter will emphasize adherence to evidence-based practices and recognizing the roles of other team members.
  • 15 Things Veterans Want You to Know [Room: Gold]
    • Presenter: PsychArmor Institute
    • The goal of this presentation is to educate anyone who works with, lives with, or cares for veterans. PsychArmor asked hundreds of Veterans what they want civilian employers, health care providers, and therapist to know about them. There were hundreds of comments and patterns. We took those comments and broke it down into 15 things Veterans want civilians to know. This presentation will teach you 5 questions you should always ask veterans, 1 question you should never ask veterans, and 15 facts that will make your more culturally competent.
  • Targeting and Eligibility for Juvenile Courts [Room: Emerald]
    • Presenter: Jacqueline van Wormer
  • Developing a Tribal Action Plan [Room: Bronze]
    • Presenter: Hon. Jocelyn Fabry, Sault St. Marie Chippewa Tribal Court
    • The Tribal Law and Order Act of 2010 requires various agencies of the federal government to support tribes in developing and implementing strategic plans – Tribal Action Plans - to combat the severe problems of alcohol and drug abuse in Indian Country.  This presentation will provide an overview of the process that the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe underwent in developing a Tribal Action Plan, including a discussion of the tools used in the community assessment, a review of the findings from their community assessment, and the process the Tribe used to develop TAP goals related to the data.   This presentation is relevant to practitioners working in all types of treatment courts, and in particular to those participating in community-driven efforts to collaborate and pool resources to address substance abuse issues at the local level.
  • Human Trafficking Overview [Room: Diamond Ballroom]
    • Presenter: Theresa Flores, LSW, MS, Traffick Free and S.O.A.P.
    • This workshop will present human trafficking basics, explore the mindset of a Victim, present the physical and emotional implications of human trafficking upon a victim, and give a personal perspective from a survivor.
  • SCAO Best Practices Break-Out - Confidentiality [Room: Amethyst]
    • Presenter: Hon. Patrick Bowler (ret.)
    • This workshop will explore federal confidentiality laws and their impact on Drug Treatment Courts. Session content will include a breakdown of 42 CFR, Part 2 and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). There will be a detailed discussion of proper consents for Release of personal health information.  The presentation will be about who is protected, what is protected, who must comply and exceptions for the rules of disclosure.
  • Drug Court Standards and On-Site Testing: the Value of Automation [Room: Jade]

  • Mental Health - Bettering the Odds: What To Do Now to Lower Recidivism [Room: Gold]
    • Presenter: Brian Swiecicki
    • In this workshop, attendees will learn specific methods that can be used to engage and support mental health court participants after graduation, which will reduce recidivism; how to develop a support group that utilizes alumni of mental health court programs to provide additional support to current participants; and, explore community options to structure participants' time and cultivate meaningful relationships for participants that will extend past graduation.
  • Identifying Appropriate Participants for Each Problem-Solving Court [Room: Bronze]

  • Michigan State Police Angel Program Panel [Room: Silver]

    • This workshop will provide an overview of the implementation actions of the MSP Angel Program. Its purpose is to educate courts, law enforcement, treatment court professionals and the community about the MSP Angel Program. ​

  • SCAO Best Practices Break-Out - Treatment [Room: Emerald]
    • Presenter: Carol Smith, Clinical Services Director, Catholic Human Services
    • ​This presentation will provide information on the standards, best practices, and promising practices related to treatment in a drug treatment court. The content will be focused on the six areas identified in SCAO best practices. Discussion will be facilitated on the implementation of the best practices in the participants' drug treatment courts.

    • This presentation will discuss the military and civilian divide and the challenges that veterans experience when transitioning. The presenter will discuss her own personal experience with this population and her perspective of the real issue. The presenter will present a solution to this problem which involves educating all Americans who work with, live with, and care for veterans. By the end of the presentation, participants will have access to an unlimited library of sources, and learn how to implement training in their current organization.

    • This workshop will discuss a new private program exclusively available through Total Court Services that will help bridge the financial gap for participants that are in need of effective monitoring programs, but cannot afford this valuable resource. We will also explore using new concepts of managing communication with participants that focus on "Tiny Habits" that can modify behavior to propel them toward more successful outcomes.
